Businesses

In 1981, while living in Quincy, IL, I founded H.R. Anderson & Associates, Inc., a consulting engineering firm specializing in wireless communications engineering projects for broadcast, MMDS, ITFS, microwave, and public utility companies.

I moved to Eugene, OR, in 1983 where I continued my consulting engineering practice. In 1985, I founded EDX Engineering, Inc., a company specializing in developing PC software programs for designing and optimizing wireless communication networks. Over the next 15 years I built EDX into a highly profitable, multi-million dollar corporation. In particular, EDX pioneered the commercial use of ray-tracing for modelling wireless propagation in urban and indoor environments. Those techniques put EDX software tools on the cutting edge of wireless modelling capabilities. Ray-tracing was the subject of my Ph.D. research at the University of Bristol.

I was President, CEO and sole owner of EDX until December, 2000, the peak of the tech boom, when I sold the business to Comarco Wireless Technologies. Inc., of Irvine, California, a publicly traded company. (NASDAQ:CMRO).

As part of the acquisition I became an employee of Comarco to assist in integrating EDX into its business. In January 2002, I left Comarco and moved to Bainbridge Island, WA, where I wrote a wireless engineering book and returned to independent consulting as president of PHYwave, Inc. PHYwave specialized in wireless network design, simulation and modeling. I’m no longer engaged in wireless engineering consulting but PHYwave still exists as the publisher of my book “Flying 7 Continents Solo”.

In 2004 I purchased EDX back from Comarco, along with some partners, for about 6% of what I sold it for in 2000. We reformed it as EDX Wireless, Inc.  I was President and CEO of EDX Wireless at various times from 2004 to 2014. From 2004 until 2019 I was majority owner of EDX with about 62% of the stock.

In 2017 the EDX Board of Directors decided to spinout a separate business called EDX Technologies, Inc., based in Austin, TX, to specialize in augmented reality data presentation and management solutions. We created EDX Group, Inc. a holding company that wholly owns EDX Wireless and initially owned a majority of EDX Technologies.

In 2019 I sold my majority stake in EDX Group to another of its shareholders.  I retained a 10% ownership position in EDX Group.

In February, 2022, I sold my remaining 10% interest in EDX Group, Inc.
